Where the scuppernong perfumes the breeze at night,

“Does anyone know the state toast? Hah! I bet you didn’t know there was an official toast.”

The indistinguishable speaker launches into a spirited rendition of North Carolina’s official ditty. “Here’s to the land of the long leaf pine, The summer land where the sun doth shine.”

“Oh,” Emily whispers conspiratorially. “I thought he meant toast-toast. Huh. Are there even different kinds of toast?” She ponders this. “Well, jelly toast. Buttered toast.”
